Amsterdam was the first city in Europe with a stock exchange. This exchange was founded in the ‘Golden age’ - the 17th century - a time of great prosperity for the Netherlands. On this exchange were stocks traded of the Dutch East Indies Company, actually the first multinational company of the world. Basically, the trading activities of that time, took place on a way like today. There were also a kind of options used. Knowing this makes it obvious why the first modern option-exchange of Europe, started in the year 1979, in Amsterdam. This after the successfull opening - around 1900 - of the modern option exchanges in the United States. Dutch brokerage firms have a long tradition of trading; not only on the Dutch and European stock exchanges, but also on the stock-, future- and option exchanges in The United States of America.
