Amsterdam
was the first city in Europe with a stock exchange.
This exchange was founded in the ‘Golden
age’ - the 17th century - a time of great
prosperity for the Netherlands. On this exchange
were stocks traded of the Dutch East Indies
Company, actually the first multinational company
of the world. Basically, the trading activities of
that time, took place on a way like today. There
were also a kind of options used. Knowing this
makes it obvious why the first modern
option-exchange of Europe, started in the year
1979, in Amsterdam. This after the successfull
opening - around 1900 - of the modern option
exchanges in the United States. Dutch brokerage
firms have a long tradition of trading; not only on
the Dutch and European stock exchanges, but also on
the stock-, future- and option exchanges in The
